The Exhibit
A stunning interactive multi-media experience, Backyards & Beyond combines eighty-one mixed media paintings by Mississippi artist and visual storyteller H.C. Porter with audio recordings of the paintings' subjects collected by exhibition co-founder Karole Sessums. The exhibit also includes large floor installations, videos, and a story kiosk.
This extraordinary merging of art and humanity tells the story of life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast during the year following Hurricane Katrina. However, each visitor will experience a much larger story within the Katrina story... a human story... a story about every one of us and what we can learn from one another in order to become better people ... more generous, more empathetic, and more inclusive.
Porter, Mississippi's premier social realist, weaves her subjects' faces and voices of diversity with the commonalities of loss and hope through her powerfully
moving environmental portrait paintings, each telling his or her own story directly to the viewer through audio guides. The result is an unforgettable immersion experience.
